In every big city like Cologne, there are state-run universities as well as private colleges.

The state-run Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln, for example is Germany´s only university for sports studies that offers Bachelor´s, Master´s and post-grad courses. Students can also study to become teachers.

The Cologne University of Applied Sciences also offers a varied course program in 10 faculties.
Social work, Internet reporting, business studies, electrical engineering and architecture are just some of the 50 courses on offer.

As to the private colleges, the independent journalists´college with a good reputation offers a four-year course for budding print, radio and Web political and business journalists.
The course includes macroeconomics and political economics studies in association with Cologne University.
