The climbing concept here has a European patent and offers climbing fans a very special experience. Deutscher Alpenverein Klettter- und Boulderzentrum München
The world’s biggest indoor and outdoor climbing facility (nearly 7,800 sq m, including boulder area), with 18-m high walls made of strongly structured 3-D panels, offering climbs of up to 25 m. It has a free-form tower, children’s play area, in-house restaurant. Difficulty levels are from 2+ to 10+. There are lots of courses and spectators are welcome. Just outside Munich, there’s also the Gilching climbing center with a 1,550 sq m indoor area and 1,150 outdoor area, including a boulder area and a large open air boulder arena, as well as a large, scalable Thailand cone.

Kletterinsel Fürstenfeld
Greater Munich’s biggest high-wire park invites climbing fans to scramble up four spectacular courses based on two giant platforms. There are 50 routes at different heights and with various difficulty levels, as well as five gliding ropes, including one that spectacularly goes over the Amper river. All this should fulfill every enthusiast’s heart’s desire.

ADFC München
In München you can cycle on extensive routes through woods or parks, along rivers and lakes. The ADFC (German Cyclists Association) has detailed maps that can be downloaded from the Web site. It organizes cycle tours, has a self-service workshop and offers many additional services.

Call a Bike
Deutsche Bahn rental cycles are parked all over the city. If you want to rent a bike, call the telephone number on the lock and you’ll be given a code that opens the lock. One minute costs 8 cents, 24 hours cost € 15 maximum (BahnCard holders € 9). For a € 36 annual fee (BahnCard holders € 27), the first 30 minutes of each rental is free. Winter break is from mid-December to mid-March.

Kart Palast Funpark Has very modern electric-powered karts. Golfen in München
In the last few years, golf has developed into trendy sport for the masses. Upper Bavaria has more than 100 golf clubs, making the Munich region arguably one of Germany’s golf centers. Many Bavarian courses are considered amongst the most attractive in the world due to their stunning Alpine or lakeside settings.

City Golf Range
“Simply train and play” is the slogan of these two golf facilities in the heart of Schwabing. 16 covered and 10 uncovered stalls, a chipping area and a sand trap wait for golf novices, advanced players and pros. In Freimann, 12 covered stalls, a 230 m range, a 800 sq m putting green, 1 fairway sand trap and 1 green sand trap let the heart of every golfer beat faster.

Münchner Golf Club

Ice skating


Eislaufen in München
Once the ice is at least 15 cm thick, the Munich authorities allow skating on the city’s lakes and other bodies of water. Ideal locations are the lakes in Ost- and Westpark, the Kleinhesseloher See at the English Gardens, the lakes in Feldmoching, Langwied, Lerchenau and the Lußsee (see also Lakes, page xxx). The Nymphenburg Castle canal setting and the lakes in the adjoining park are particularly beautiful. In addition to these natural areas, there are possibilities to pirouette on various artificial rinks when the weather is not cold enough.

Roller-blading


Inline-Skaten in München
You can skate in Munich not only during Blade Night, when the masses roll right through the city, but also at many other locations and opportunities. The areas along the Isar, the northern part of the English Gardens and the Olympia Park are particularly popular. There’s also a lovely circuit just outside the city at Schloss Schleiß-heim (S1 Oberschleißheim). Highly recommended is the 7 km stretch on Pupplinger Au.

Fußball in München
For a kick-about go to the English Gardens. Here in the summer, scores of hobby soccer players try to bend it like Beckham. Surfing


Eisbachwelle
Surfers have made wave-riding an unusual tourist attraction on the Eisbach, to the right of the Haus der Kunst. The devil lies not only in the detail here, but also under water: a strong current and a massive cement block require surfing prowess. If you don’t trust yourself on the wave, you should at least take the time to watch – it’s certainly worth a look! The surfing was tolerated by the authorities until July 2010 when it became legal.

Floßlände
Meeting place for city surfers in Munich’s south that’s just as popular as the Eisbach. On an Isar branch waterway, water rats ride the surf here. Even beginners can show their talents here because the current is not very strong compared with the Eisbach.
