Farmers
Traditional steak restaurant chain furnished in American ranch style. Unlike on a ranch, the Black Angus and Hereford cattle don’t run free here. They are processed in the company’s own butchers, giving diners a chance to enjoy tender grilled steaks in a quiet setting.

Hard Rock Cafe
The Cologne branch of this (especially by tourists) well-known café and bar chain. American dishes range from various salads, sandwiches, burgers to steaks and barbecue dishes. Large choice of cocktails and American beers.
›› Altstadt-Nord, Gürzenichstr. 8, Tel. 2 72 68 80, www.hardrock.com

Joe Champs
For many this is the perfect after work place. Customers enjoy hamburgers, wraps and cool drinks against a backdrop of the latest sporting events on four large screens and countless small screens. Joe Champs is mainly a sports bar rather than an American restaurant.
›› Neustadt-Nord, Hohenzollernring 1-3, Tel. 2 57 28 54, www.joe-champs.de

Louisiana
This pleasantly furnished restaurant specializes in Cajun and Creole new cuisine. Fruity and spicy sauces give the fish and meat dishes the special taste of the South. Southern U.S. dishes such as jambalaya, a hot, spicy dishes similar to Spanish paella, or tender bison steaks are not for those with sensitive palates. Best try them for yourself.

Tex-Mex

El Gato
If it’s time for TexMex once more, then El Gato, illuminated in green, is one of the best places to go. The good location of this well-established Mexican restaurant makes it perennially popular with Cologne’s nightlife crowd. To fortify yourself the more-ish nachos with spicy dips, enchiladas, tacos and the many (also addictive) cocktails can be recommended.

Sausalitos
Party nights in Cologne often start at Sausalitos. A mixed crowd in a good mood meets here to enjoy cool drinks, hot sounds and excellent down-to-earth Mexican cuisine. A good atmosphere is inevitable with all that. Take note of happy hour, every day from 3 pm to 8 pm.

Taco Loco
Taco Loco has three Cologne restaurants where you can enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine, delicious cocktails and a relaxed party atmosphere. The restaurants are especially popular at weekends when they are filled to the last seat and the waiting staff whirl through the crowd with burgers, fajitas and salads.

Latin America

Carlos
The best sellers at Carlos, named after owner Carlos Morfa, are the steaks that are cooked to perfection. Carlos looks after guests assiduously and is happy to help with those difficult dining decisions, such as whether to order as a starter the Cuban-style fish soup or maybe the fried cassava. A small tip – try the home-brewed beer, made according to a Cuban recipe, best of all with a steak.
›› Lindenthal, Dürener Str. 152, Tel. 990 76 88, www.carloskoeln.com

El Inca
This cellar restaurant has a friendly atmosphere with a decor that’s a combination of playful and typical South American. The cuisine is geared toward Latin American favorites with a big variety of culinary delights. The friend mashed potato with various fillings is popular and you also can’t go wrong with the hake fillet in tequila sauce. Customers also come to enjoy the large choice of delicious cocktails. Tip – happy hour is from 6 pm to 8 pm every day.
›› Neustadt-Süd, Görresstr. 2, Tel. 24 55 03, www.el-inca.de

Maredo
Maredo steak houses are a familiar sight in German cities. Cologne has four. Although the name sounds typically Argentinean, it’s a German chain. But the concept is right and the quality is always good.
›› Altstadt-Nord, Domprobst-Ketzer-Str. 1-9, Tel. 13 47 98
›› Altstadt-Nord, Am Heumarkt 42/44, Tel. 2 58 11 77

Moyos
Moyos is an excellent place to try many not well known Creole dishes and discover exciting new taste sensations. Here Caribbean cooking art is mixed with French and American cuisine creating an extremely exquisite combination. Typical dishes include sweet potatoes, maniok, (cassava) and pepper sauce. Also popular are Creole pancakes and spicy barbecued fish.
