Public transportation in Munich
Munich has one of Germany’s most extensive and efficient public transport networks. The S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and trams connect the city and the surrounding region reliably, making a car unnecessary for many residents.
All major public transport services are integrated into the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). In addition to the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses, the network also includes numerous regional trains and regional bus services. A single ticket can therefore be used across different modes of transport within the valid fare zones.
Since the fare reform introduced in 2019, the MVV area has been divided into Zone M, which covers the entire city of Munich and several neighbouring communities, and Zones 1 to 6 outside the city.
For most journeys within Munich, a ticket for Zone M is sufficient. Tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, customer service centres, or conveniently through the MVV app, the MVG app or the DB Navigator app.
