What should the school of the future look like?

Anyone guiding children on their educational journey today faces important questions: Which school prepares them not only for exams, but for life? Where are knowledge, character, and community equally nurtured? For many international and German families in and around Munich, the answer is clear: Bavarian International School (BIS).

With around 1,250 students from more than 70 nations, BIS is far more than just a place of learning. It is a vibrant community – and for many, a second home. What makes this school (with kindergarten starting at age 3) so special, and why is this IB World School already a school of the future? Seven key reasons offer an insight.

Academic excellence

BIS follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, one of the most respected educational programs in the world. The results speak for themselves: in 2025, BIS graduates achieved an average score of 34.3 points, significantly above the global average of 30.5. Graduates receive offers from renowned universities in Germany and around the world.

Personalized education

BIS, students are at the center of everything. Small class sizes and highly qualified, dedicated teachers allow for individualized support. Teachers see themselves as mentors who recognize talents and guide young people along their unique personal paths.

Developing future skills

Knowledge alone is no longer enough. That is why BIS places great emphasis on skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, complemented by emotional intelligence, resilience, and digital literacy. “We prepare our students for a world in which many of the future careers do not even exist yet,” says Head of School Dr. Chrissie Sorenson.

An international spirit

Diversity is part of everyday life at BIS. English is the language of instruction, complemented by German, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Mandarin, as well as additional languages offered through the Home Language Programme. This environment helps children grow up with a truly global mindset and the confidence to navigate different cultures.

Holistic development

Learning does not end in the classroom. More than 80 after-school activities per week, international programs such as Model United Nations, European Eco-School, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, as well as mandatory community service, help develop character, responsibility, and teamwork.

Digitalization & innovation

Modern technology is a natural part of everyday school life – used thoughtfully and purposefully. While smartphones are banned, digital learning is actively encouraged. With the new €25 million Creativity & Innovation Centre (CIC), BIS is further investing in its development as a school of the future. The guiding concept: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math).

Opening: February 2027.

A strong community

What parents, students, and teachers appreciate most is the strong sense of belonging within a closely connected community. Respect, care, and collaboration define everyday life at BIS.
