Cologne´s electricity, natural gas, water and district heating are provided mainly by RheinEnergie AG, the city´s contracted main supplier and one of Germany´s largest regional power suppliers.
In Bonn, the public works department, called Stadtwerke Bonn, provides energy and drinking water and is also responsible for local roads and waste disposal.
Both organizations are big sports sponsors, for example RheinEnergie gives its name to Cologne´s soccer stadium.
The companies offer green electricity packages. RheinEnergie and Stadtwerke Bonn also supply environmentally friendly natural gas to households for heating and cooking.
Natural gas enthusiasts can also use gas to fuel their vehicles.
North Rhine-Westphalia has one of Germany´s densest networks of fuelling stations offering natural gas.
After the power supply market was liberalized, there are now alternatives to the regional public suppliers including eprimo and FlexStrom.
