Max-Joseph-Platz is one of Munich’s most famous squares. Surrounded by the Bavarian State Opera, the National Theatre, the Residenz and the elegant Maximilianstraße, it ranks among the cultural and architectural highlights of the historic city centre. Since the end of 2025, however, the square has taken on a noticeably different appearance: More green spaces, additional seating and movable trees have significantly improved its atmosphere and appeal.

A temporary redesign with lasting ambitions

For decades, Max-Joseph-Platz was primarily regarded as a representative urban space. Visitors admired the impressive architecture, but the largely paved square offered limited opportunities to relax and spend time there.

That changed with a redesign completed in December 2025. The City of Munich introduced eight lawn areas, additional seating and movable trees. For now, these measures are intended as an interim solution designed to demonstrate how the square could evolve with more greenery and improved quality of stay.

Reinterpreting historical ideas

What makes the project particularly interesting is that parts of the redesign draw inspiration from historical concepts associated with Leo von Klenze, the architect of both the square and the National Theatre. The project therefore combines modern ideas of liveable urban spaces with references to Munich’s architectural heritage.

Whether the current concept will become a permanent feature remains to be seen. Visitor feedback as well as heritage preservation requirements are expected to play an important role in future decisions.

A landmark in the heart of Munich

Regardless of the recent changes, Max-Joseph-Platz remains one of the most attractive locations in Munich’s city centre. At its centre stands the monument to King Maximilian I Joseph, while some of Bavaria’s most important cultural institutions surround the square.

Many of Munich’s top attractions can easily be reached on foot from here. The Residenz, Hofgarten, Maximilianstraße, Feldherrnhalle and Marienplatz are all just a short walk away.

The square is particularly impressive in the evening when the façades of the Opera House and the Residenz are illuminated. At that moment, Munich reveals its elegant and cosmopolitan character.

Combine a visit to Max-Joseph-Platz with a tour of the Residenz, a stroll along Maximilianstraße or a performance at the Bavarian State Opera. Its central location makes the square an ideal starting point for exploring Munich’s historic centre.
