Allianz Arena: Excursion to the soccer temple

Allianz_ArenaAllianz Arena, © NEW IN THE CITY

When the Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning was unveiled in May 2005, both Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich have treated themselves to a giant new home. The clubs have spent around € 340 million on the new stadium. The architecture is truly state of the art. The arena is lit up in either red or blue, depending on who the home team is. Inside, 66,000 fans cheer their teams from fully covered seating areas.

The subway station in Fröttmaning was expanded, a new platform and a pedestrian bridge were built to transport the fans to the stadium safely. Highways A9 and A99 were enlarged to accomodate fans coming by car. After 33 years, the Allianz Arena has replaced the Olympic Stadium as home of Germany’s most successful premier league soccer team, FC Bayern München. The Allianz AG insurance company has purchased the right to the arena name until June 30, 2021.

On 9 June 2006, the entire world of soccer had their eyes fixed on the Allianz Arena, where the opening match of the FIFA World Cup took place. A total of six World Cup games had been played in Munich, including three more group games, one quarter-final and one semi-final.
