In Munich the S-Bahns and underground trains along with the buses and trams make up an extensive public transport network. All the services run under the umbrella of the MVV which means one ticket is valid for all. MVV transports 1.5 million people to all corners of the city and back every day. The Munich public transport system is divided into four zones. Each zone is subdivided into four rings so there are 16 rings in total. The prices for single tickets and strip tickets depend on how many zones you travel across. All other ticket prices (such as yearly, monthly or weekly commuter passes) are dependent on how many rings you cross. The entire inner city – and even a bit further – counts as one zone (white zone/inner zone). Travel within one zone without changing direction costs € 2.20. There is an exception: short trips (up to four stops but no more than two by S-Bahn or underground) cost only €1.10.
