| Charlotte Knobloch elected President of German Jewish Committee |
The German Jewish Committee has elected Munich native Charlotte Knobloch to succeed Paul Spiegel who passed away late in April as President. Thus for the first time a woman leads the political representation of Germany's Jewish congregations. 73-year old Charlotte Knobloch was one of the committee's vice presidents until now. Dieter Graumann from Frankfurt was elected vice president in her place, vice president Salomon Korn - also from Frankfurt - was re-elected.
Charlotte Knobloch has been leading the “Israelitische Kultusgemeinde München und Oberbayern” (Jewish Congregation of Munich and Upper Bavaria) for many years. Munich's mayor, Christian Ude comments her election, “The fact that our honorary citizen, Charlotte Knobloch, was elected top-ranking representative of the Jewish people in Germany is wonderful news for this city, the city council and myself. The new Jewish Center at Jakobsplatz, that will be Germany's biggest Jewish institution, will forever be connected with Charlotte Knobloch's commitment and the opening of the synagogue on November 9th, 2006 will be the highlight of her life's work for her home town.”
