It will be the top event of the year: On June 9th, 2006 the FIFA World Cup (TM) Germany will begin. And Munich will play a major role. The opening game, Germany against Costa Rica will take place right here. With another three first round games, one game of the round of 16 and one semi-final, the city keeps hosting first-rate games over the following couple of weeks. Yet not only at the Allianz Arena, that was renamed "FIFA WM-Stadion" for the duration of the World Cup, everything in Munich is about soccer. On large video screens at beer gardens and pubs fans can watch live broadcasts of the games, numerous events and parties, exhibitions and other sporting events attract soccer fans (see World Cup Special).

olympiapark.jpgThe Olympic Park will be the center of events: June 6th through July 9th the official Fan Festival Munich is celebrated. On a 60-square meter screen on pontoons that floats on the Olympic Lake together with a stage, 56 FIFA World Cup games will be broadcast live. In addition there will be recurring lives hook-ups with other World Cup cities. Almost every day – except during the first round, June 10th through 19th – German and international bands and singers from almost all countries participating in the World Cup will entertain the audience. The FIFA World Cup 2006 (TM) Fan Festivals begins on June 6th and and closes on July 9th, 2006. It opens at 1 pm every day. On days with games, the Fan Festival closes about 30 minutes after the end of the last game, on days without games around 11 pm. Additional events are scheduled for June, turning the area into a prime venue even without the FIFA World Cup. June 14th through July 9th the Tollwood-Festival offers plays, concerts and stand-up comedy for example. At 9 pm, after the concerts, FIFA World Cup games are also broadcast live on a big screen at Tollwood’s music arena. June 16th through 18th, the Olympic Stadium hosts the Second Internatonal Wine Festival, "Weinwelt München 2006".

suedkurve2.jpgAnother opportunity to breathe some soccer air is a visit to the "Südkurve Deutschland Open Air Arena" on the area of Mercedeswelt/Donnersbergerbrücke at the Arnulfpark. There, a temporary stadium accomodating 4,000 fans is being erected. At this stadium, fans can watch live broadcasts of the FIFA World Cup games on20 to 40 sqm LED screens. A rich support program will entertain fans who visit Südkurve Deutschland, as well. For example tournaments, stadium bets, goal contests, concerts and cultural events will take place during the 31 days the stadium is in use. Weitere Informationen unter www.suedkurve-deutschland.de
